Teddy Pendergrass, who became the reigning R & B sex symbol in the 1970s and ’80s with his strength, male voices and passionate love ballads and later became a source of inspiration, after suffering a devastating car accident that has left him paralyzed, died Wednesday at age 59. The son of singer Teddy Pendergrass II, said his father died in a hospital in suburban Philadelphia.

The singer underwent surgery for colon cancer eight months ago and had “a difficult recovery, his son said. “To all his fans who loved his music, thank you,” said his son. “He will live through his music.” Pendergrass suffered a spinal cord and was paralyzed from the waist down in the accident 1982 cars. He spent six months in a hospital but returned to record the next year with the album “love language.” He returned to the stage at the Live Aid concert in 1985, the execution of his wheelchair.
